Dr. Theerawit Wilaiprasitporn’s bio

Dr. Theerawit Wilaiprasitporn was born in Ratchaburi, Thailand. Currently, he is lecturer and founding member of School of Information Science & Technology at Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science & Technology (VISTEC), Thailand. He is also a co-PI of Bio-inspired Robotics and Neural engineering (BRAIN) lab at VISTEC.

He received his B.Eng. Degree in Electrical Engineering (second honors) from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, in 2013. Within 3.5 years, he did Master (2015) and Doctoral (2017) Degree in Engineering from Mechanical and Environmental Informatics, Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. As a Ph.D. student, he worked in the areas of Brain-Computer Interfaces and Bio-Potential Application. He obtained own research funding (1.9 MJPY) from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). While pursuing his Degree, he did short-term research in three countries including NASA Ames Research Center in USA, Research Institute National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities in Japan and National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) in Thailand. After graduation, He was a JSPS Postdoctoral fellow at Tokyo Institute of Technology for a semester.

Current Research Interests:

An investigation of closed-loop EEG-based Brain Computer Interface (BCI) helps bridge the gap in communication between man and machine. Understanding patterns of brain activity from basic neuroscience research will help engineering to optimize the BCI system that could be applied in the real-world environment. Advanced signal processing techniques and pattern recognition methods such as machine learning, artificial neural network, and deep learning can improve the efficiency of BCI by increasing information transfer rate and accuracy. Ultimately, research based on BCI could lead to the development of novel tools used in both clinical and healthy populations.
